JBL Micro Wireless Bluetooth Speaker

Sound quality is much better than my cellphone's built in speaker (galaxy note). You can feel the bass and sound quality is good. It is basically more than enough for room and indoor used if loudness is the concern. Portability is the great factor to buy this. It is lightweight and it comes with a pouch. You can opt to use 3.5mm wire or just connect it via bluetooth. It is has an internal lithium battery.

Japanese Encephalitis in the Philippines

source: Center for Disease Control and Prevention

What is Japanese encephalitis?

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a disease spread through mosquito bites. Symptoms usually take 5-15 days to develop and include fever, headache, vomiting, confusion, and difficulty moving. Symptoms that develop later include swelling around the brain and coma. JE is a serious disease that may cause death.

Who is at risk?

Travelers who go to Asia are at risk for getting Japanese encephalitis. For most travelers the risk is extremely low but depends on where you are going, the time of year, your planned activities, and the length of the trip. You are at higher risk if you are traveling to rural areas, will be outside frequently, or will be traveling for a long period of time.  In mild climates in northern Asia the risk for JE is greater in the summer and fall. In tropical and subtropical areas, there is a risk year-round.

What can travelers do to prevent Japanese encephalitis?

Culex tarsalis mosquito
Travelers can protect themselves from JE by getting JE vaccine and preventing mosquito bites.

Get JE vaccine, if recommended:

Talk to your doctor about your travel plans:
Your doctor can help you decide if you need the JE vaccine based on the length of your trip, the areas where you will be traveling, and your planned activities.
See your doctor at least 6 weeks before your trip:
The JE vaccine is given in 2 doses that are spaced over a month.
You should get the last dose at least 10 days before your trip.
Prevent mosquito bites:

If you are bitten by mosquitoes:

Avoid scratching mosquito bites.
Apply hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to reduce itching.

How to Avoid Extra Charge by Taxi Drivers

Since LTFRB suspended Uber's operations recently thisweek, some commuters opt to ride taxi once again. Someone posted on facebook her technique to avoid the extra Php 100.00 charge by a taxi driver.

Here's the script:

Me: (Pumara ng Taxi na chaka, dahil wala ng choice)
Kuya sa BGC nga po!

Tsuper: Boss trapik dun.

Me: E pa'no?

Tsuper: Sige. Basta dagdagan mo ha. P100.

(sumakay ako, Umandar. Nagtulug-tulugan habang natatrapik.. Nakarating sa BGC.....)

Metro: 209 pesoses.

Tsuper: Yung dagdag ha.

Me: Nag-abot ng P220. Tapos dumukot uli ng P100. Bago ko iniabot ang "dagdag," binulungan ko muna ang pera. Some Latin sounding gibberish in the form of incantation na may patirik-tirik pa ng mata. Dinila-dilaan at hinipan ang pera...Pasigaw ang pagtatapos at nag ala- Mariah Carey whistle!

"Globilium Sancti Taxium Tsuperas Punyateras!!"

And here's the technique we can use to this kind of taxi drivers :D

Comparative Analysis of Transportation Network Companies (TNCs) and Conventional Taxi Services in Metro Manila

Abstract: This research presents a comparative analysis of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) of TNCs vs Conventional Taxis. The key performance indicators include travel speed, reliability, passenger expense, and quality of service. Travel diaries from regular riders of Uber, GrabCar and Conventional Taxi’s ran for 30 days in order to gather data and compare its KPIs. Hence, additional surveys such as: (1) availability of vehicle check and (2) performance indicator survey were also conducted in order to validate.
Based from the results of the travel diary submitted, Uber is faster than GrabCar and Conventional Taxi. In terms of reliability or the number of available vehicles at a specified pick up point, GrabCar dominates Uber and Conventional Taxi. Uber is said to be cheaper than conventional taxis. However, GrabCar was costlier among the three (3) transport modes. Lastly, Uber and GrabCar has better quality of service compared to conventional taxis.
Key words:  TNC, Uber, GrabCar, Conventional Taxi, Key Performance Indicators, Taxi, Travel Speed, Reliability, Passenger Expense, Quality of Service

1.       INTRODUCTION

1.1      Background of the Study

Uber is a popular mode of car sharing in the United States that is currently becoming popular in Metro Manila. GrabCar, on the other hand, provides the same services as Uber and was an added feature in GrabTaxi App. It originated in Malaysia and has start up success in the Philippines. This service is classified by the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) as Transport Network Company (TNC), while their partners are called Transportation Network Vehicle Service (TNVS).

The previous studies and problems from other countries where car-sharing success originated can be used as a basis for upgrading our transport system. Hence, solutions and improvements can be incorporated to TNCs in our country to help further enhance its services.

In order to compare the services and performances of TNCs vs Conventional Taxi, Key Performance Indicators will be used as a measurement. As such, Travel Speed, Reliability, Passenger Fare, and Quality of Service will be used to validate the beneficial impact of TNCs to our transport system. The positive results which translate to a more convenient and safer ride in turn can contribute to a sustainable transportation system.

1.1      Research Problem

Performance indicators of largest TNCs (Uber, & GrabCar) against Conventional Taxi should be checked to compare the quality of service of each mode.

1.2     Objectives

This study has the following objectives:

a)      Identify the role of Uber & GrabCar in our transportation sector and sustainable transport;
b)      To measure performance of existing taxi services versus the newly introduce Transportation Network Vehicle Service (TNVS): Uber and GrabCar;
c)      To formulate recommendations for TNCs as well as for improving conventional taxi services.

1.3     Significance of the Study

Formulate recommendations to TNCs and identify the areas that our existing taxi services has yet to improve.

1.4     Scope and Limitation

The scope of the study includes the following:
a) The study is limited to TNC like Uber & GrabCar, and Conventional Taxis in Metro Manila
b) Study area is limited to Metro Manila
c) The study focuses on the comparison of these three types of transit, namely: Uber, GrabCar, and Conventional Taxi
d) The performance indicators are limited to Reliability, Travel Speed, Passenger Expense and Quality of Service

1.5     Study Framework

Taxi is a public utility vehicle for hire with a driver, used by single passenger or a group of people, and often not shared using a car. It transports passengers to the location of their choice point to point.

Transportation Network Company (TNC) is a company that uses online-enabled application using personal and non-commercial vehicles for car-sharing/ridesharing/resourcing purposes. (Uber, GrabCar, Lyft Etc.)

The study will focus on the Four (4) Performance Indicators in order to compare and analyze the service provided by Uber, GrabCar and Conventional Taxi.
